Opening BELA Seminar

The seminar took place on 30-31 May 2008 in Berlin with the subject "Europe - Global Power or Little Venice".

It was devoted to examining the challenges facing Europe in our multi-polar world. A selected group of nearly 30 young European leaders attended the event which focused on issues such as the impact of the financial crisis on the stability of the global economy, the future of transatlantic relations, European foreign policy, the economics of globalization and sustainability, energy, climate and identity.

The seminar was addressed by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference; Dr Christoph Heusgen, foreign policy advisor to the German chancellor; Paul Hofheinz, President of the Lisbon Council; Dr Paul Nolte, Professor, Freie Universität Berlin; Dr Ulrike Guérot, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations; Jennifer Morgan, Director, Global Climate Change, E3G; Professor Witold OrÅ‚owski, former Advisor to the President of Poland; Judy Dempsey of the International Herald Tribune and Klaus-Dieter Frankenberger of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
